We recommend taking off your watch before going into the sauna.
In the sauna, not only humidity but especially high temperatures and strong temperature changes affect the watch. These conditions can place greater stress on materials and components than normal everyday use.
Why is the sauna problematic for a watch?
High temperatures can, among other things:
cause seals to age faster,
affect lubricants in the movement,
dry out or discolor leather straps,
place greater stress on adhesives and coatings,
cause additional stress through subsequent rapid cooling.
Particularly critical is the rapid transition between high heat and cold water or a cold environment.
But my watch is water-resistant – isn't that enough?
No.
Water resistance does not automatically mean heat resistance.
A watch's water resistance is tested under defined test conditions. A sauna or steam bath represents a different kind of stress due to high temperatures, steam, and temperature changes.
Therefore, even a watch with high water resistance should not be worn in the sauna.
Does this also apply to the steam room / steam bath?
Yes.
We also recommend taking off your watch in the steam room. The combination of high humidity, heat, and water vapor can strain seals and materials.
What about leather straps?
You should protect leather straps especially from heat, sweat, and high humidity.
These influences can cause the leather to dry out faster, discolor, or alter its structure.
Where should I keep my watch during the sauna?
Store your watch in a dry place that is protected as much as possible from temperature extremes.
Ideally, choose a spot outside the hot sauna area.
This way, you protect the movement, seals, and strap from unnecessary stress.
